Johnstone Grand Rapids EPA 608 REFRIGERANT CERTIFICATION

EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians who install, maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified.

608 Test Includes:
•Core: Refrigeration Basics
Also covers laws & dates – everyone must pass core
•Type I Certification: Small Appliances
Includes refrigerators, freezers, room a/c, & vending
•Type II Certification: High Pressure Applications
•Type III Certification: Low Pressure Applications
•Universal Technician:
Includes certification on Type I, Type II & Type III levels

If you have taken the class & test before and need to come back for a retake on any section, bring the card or letter that states the results from your first test in order to retest.

Half Day Class Includes:
Study manual, class instruction, testing & breakfast refreshments.
Recommend sign-up at least two weeks in advance so you have time to study. Manual sent direct to you when you rsvp (Spanish version available upon request), bring manual to class with you, along with picture ID and non-programmable calculator.  7:30am registration & refreshments.  Retakes arrive at 10am.

  • HANDS ON TASKS LEARNED WILL INCLUDE:
  • 8 low voltage wiring scenarios

Cambria Suites in Traverse City Hands-On Intro to Basic Hydronics

In this course, participants will study the basic operation and maintenance of hot water boilers and hydronic systems. Students learn to identify and understand the operation of boiler components and hot water piping arrangements. Installation, service, and troubleshooting issues will also be covered.

As part of this hands-on course, participants will assemble and wire a control module that incorporates thermostats, zone valves, and an aquastat relay.

Topics Include:

● Types of hot water boilers including the difference between high mass and low mass

● Boiler system components and their function – used for safety and control

● Different types of piping arrangements and their applications

● The function of hot water circulating pumps and zone valve operation

● Compare and contrast different types of hot water terminal devices

● Operation of radiant hot water systems for in-floor heating and snow melt

● Basic installation practices including proper location of expansion tanks

● How to service and troubleshoot common system issues

Students are required to bring the following tools to this class:  Electrical wire stripper/cutter,  ¼” Nut Driver, Wire crimper, 6-in-1 screwdriver, Razor knife

Seating is limited to the first 16 students!

Johnstone Muskegon Introduction to Commercial Refrigeration

This course is designed to introduce HVAC technicians to commercial refrigeration equipment… primarily coolers and freezers.

An emphasis will be placed on how commercial refrigeration equipment differs from conventional air conditioning, including components and their functionality.

Topics Include:
• Basic components that make up commercial refrigeration
• Understanding the defrost cycle for commercial coolers and freezers
• How head pressure controls are used on outdoor condensing units
• Metering device functionality
• Compressor controls
• Servicing and troubleshooting of the refrigeration system and electrical components
